Almost any lapel pin can be plated with precious metals like gold, silver, and nickel. These metals are electroplated onto a base of bronze, copper, iron, stainless steel or aluminum and polished to a shiny finish. Black nickel plating is actually a dyed version of nickel plating and is mostly used as a border for pins with color (See pin types)
